McKinley Elementary is asking 5th grade students to volunteer as “Hug and Go” escorts.
What is it? “Hug and Go” escort program. The PTA SRTS committee is asking for 5th grade volunteers to walk younger students who are dropped off at the “Hug and Go” to their class lines. 5th grade escorts will be assigned to the 89th and 90th street cut outs. There will be SRTS parent volunteers at each of the cut outs monitoring the process.
Why are we doing this? In order for the “Hug and Go” to run smoothly, students need to exit their cars efficiently and walk to their class lines. In our first year, we found that many parents were worried that their child would not make it to their line and would “linger” in the cut out. To help with this, we are going to provide escorts. It also gives the new 5th graders a chance to demonstrate their leadership and pride in McKinley to the younger students.
What is the time commitment? The program will start the first day of school and will run through the beginning of November. We will ask that the student volunteers arrive at 8 a.m. They will be excused to class once the first bell rings. Teachers will also have a list of the volunteers for the day. Students can volunteer as often as frequently as they would like- even volunteering one time would be great!
